Interviewee 1:  Male, Senior. Has participated in bookstore all four years here at Notre Dame. He competed in varsity basketball at the high school level for three years. He states as his reasons for entering the tournament, to compete in something in which half of the campus participates. "There are a lot of good athletes within our student body and this is a great way to compete in an organized competitive realm." What he knows about the Jumpball program is what he learned from becoming a commissioner and that is where he was taught what this program is all about. From that point on he has understood that this tournament mostly helps to fund the children's program in Jamaica. "The Round of 8 at least" is the round at which he wishes to reach for it to be a successful tournament. Citing what he looks for in finding a team, he states the "most important thing in a game, on outdoor courts, is 5 guys that compete, refuse to lose, dig deep. During bookstore there is a need to go to battle, that’s the formula for winning, you also want a big team, defense and rebounding are huge, especially with the uncontrollable weather." Although he has never drank excessively before any games, he really thinks its just people looking to have a good time, sometimes people get too drunk and run the risk of getting hurt but at least they accept their team isn’t going to advance, it looks like fun for them.. Regarding his expectations for the tournament, he wishes to come out and compete at a high level, and play to win every game.

Interview 2:
Male, Junior. Has participated in bookstore all three years, and played high school basketball. He has participated in this tournament every year because, "it is a Notre Dame tradition, and is always fun. Playing basketball is always a good time, when there's a chance to play decently organized basketball it’s always a good thing." Regarding the jumpball program, he was previously unaware of the great benefits that are provided to it by the bookstore tournament. Since becoming a commissioner, however, he has become aware of the fact that much of the money made from the tournament is donated to this children's program. He claims that if he can't find five guys that have a legitimate shot to win the whole tournament then he doesn't try and find that great of a team. He has never drank before a game but for those that do he says, he thinks if you're doing it to have fun then there’s nothing wrong with that. Lastly he states that his expectations upon entering the tournament are that he expects to win it (then pauses and laughs) and says that he is just happy to participate in a campuswide event in which people get to have a little fun playing a sport and actually are giving to a greater cause than they might realize.

Interviewee 3:   Female, Junior. 3 years of participating in the bookstore tournament with no previous basketball experience. As far as expectations go, going into each year, she joins up with four of her friends and they usually drink before their first round game. Part of her reasoning for becoming a commissioner is because of the Jumpball program which she likes how it is intended to keep kids from choosing violence in hopes that playing organized sports might help make their childhoods a little less stressful. Because her team decides to "party a little too hard" before their games, she never anticipated making it past one or more rounds. She actually said that each year she hopes that her team "might be slotted up to go against another team that does not take the tournament so seriously so that they could all drink together before the game." Because of her habits before she plays in the tournament, her expectations as a player are no more than to have a great time in an organized, competitive arena with some of her best friends. Her expectations as a commissioner are to stay as active as possible on campus and having an extra activity to add to the resume doesn't hurt either.

Interviewee 4: Female, Junior. Zero years of participation in the tournament with no previous basketball experience. She has never played on a team due to lack of being able to find four of her friends that might want to play. She did note that after becoming a commissioner this year, she has decided that the tournament looks fun enough that she wishes to find a team to play on next year. She states as her reason for becoming a commissioner simply, "to get involved on campus, it is something that looks good on a resume and has actually been an enjoyable experience." She was previously unaware of the Jumpball program but has since stated that her views of the entire competition changed when she found out that what everyone was playing for was actually, "a great cause for some less fortunate young children." Her expectations as a player next year are to enjoy the first round game she plays in with her friends and maybe actually advance into the second round. She hopes that being a commissioner next year is as enjoyable as it was this year, and that the, "weather cooperates at least as much as it did this year, unlike last year when it was snowing during the final couple of rounds."
