The Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore Basketball Tournament has been held annually since 1972 in the Spring on Notre Dame's campus.   Bookstore basketball is the world’s largest outdoor 5-on-5 Basketball tournament in the world. Every year, nearly 700 teams, comprised of students, faculty, and staff from Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s, and Holy Cross College.

Teams consisting of five or more players pay a small fee of $25.00 to enter the tournament, a majority of that money is then donated to the Jumpball Program. The Jumpball program is a Jamaican charity which states as it’s goal to provide the children of Jamaica the opportunity to learn self esteem, teamwork, dedication, sportsmanship, camaraderie, and the fundamentals of basketball. Sponsored by the Notre Dame club of Jamaica, this charity strives to keep disadvantaged youth away from drugs and violence in their neighborhoods. Working for positive social change, the Notre Dame Club of Jamaica strives to extend the values of the Notre Dame family through the funds provided by the Bookstore Basketball Tournament.

What is this website intended to convey?

Using the website, Surveymonkey.com, I created a short questionnaire for those participating in the 2010 Bookstore Basketball Tournament to fill out. Through the social networking site Facebook.com I was able to send out this survey to nearly a hundred students and faculty competing in this year's tournament. The purpose of the survey was to gauge a better understanding of the motivations for competing in the tournament for a relatively large number of participants. Along with this survey, I conducted first person interviews with ten individuals regarding their reasons for partaking in this year's tournament. These interviews were a good way to find some of the underlying reasons for participation in the tournament on a more personal level. This allowed me to engage in follow up questions and speak face to face with actual competitors and bookstore commissioners.
