Notre Dame Bookstore Basketball 2010

Methods

Using the website, Surveymonkey.com, I created a short questionnaire for those participating in the 2010 Bookstore Basketball Tournament to fill out. Through the social networking site Facebook.com I was able to send out this survey to nearly a hundred students and faculty competing in this year's tournament. The purpose of the survey was to gauge a better understanding of the motivations for competing in the tournament for a relatively large number of participants. Along with this survey, I conducted first person interviews with several bookstore basketball commissioners regarding their reasons for partaking in this year's tournament. These interviews were a good way to find some of the underlying reasons for participation in the tournament on a more personal level. This allowed me to engage in follow up questions and actually speak face to face with people who were both competitors and commissioners.

For the surveys I conducted the following questions were asked:
1.) During your four years here at Notre Dame, how often will/have you competed in the Bookstore Basketball Tournament?
2.) Have you ever played organized basketball for a team? If so, at what level?
3.) What would you say the main reason is that you have chosen to or not to partake in this tournament?
4.) Are you at all familiar with the Jumpball program? Or is this not one of the more important aspects of the tournament for you?
5.) How far do you think you will make it in this tournament? Rounds of 528 or worse? 256? 128? 64? 32? 16? 8? 4? Championship?
6.) When deciding upon what teammates you wish to play with, what are the most important factors you consider? Basketball Talent? Friends with them? etc.?
7.) Does your team usually dress up or have uniforms for this tournament? If so why do you choose to do so?
8.) How do you feel about teams that decide to drink excessively before their games? Have you ever engaged in such behavior? If so why?
9.) Generally speaking, what are your expectations from the tournament each year? For example: just to have a good time with your friends? to advance far into the tournament? to donate to a good cause overseas? or simply to play a little competitive basketball?
10.) Do you feel that this year's bookstore basketball has reached those standards/expectations like those in the past? Why or why not?
